Protest the Federal Bureau of Land Management’s proposed euthanization of wild horses and burros! SUPPORT THE AMERICAN WILD HORSE PRESERVATION CAMPAIGN!

July 23, 2008

For years, the bureau has been running the Adopt-A-Horse program, selling mustangs from the range to those who would care for them. But 30,000 once-wild horses were never adopted and are being boarded by the agency at facilities in Kansas and Oklahoma (another 33,000 run wild). As feed and gas grow more expensive, the rate of adoptions plummets.
(the bureau has often been accused of mismanagement. F.e. in the mid nineties The Associated Press found out that a handful of agency employees were adopting mustangs to sell them to slaughterhouses)

Why this insane proposition? There are other ways of keeping the herd from growing.

In parts of Africa they experienced a very similar problem with the Elephant herds.

Whereas in South Africa they are still being shot, in Kenya the government created a birth control program which it has been running very successfully over several years.

Though the technology to use birth control on horses exists, the Bureau is just not investing in it.

I am a Professional Photographer with a passion for photographing Wild Horses. Each year I go out into the field there are fewer and fewer horses and they are much harder to locate. The BLM has more horses in holding facilities then remain on the range. These “Icons of the West” belong to the citizens of the United States and need to be preserved for future generations.

The Mustang is a wildlife species and universally a symbol of freedom.

Nature untampered on God’s green earth exceeds current standards presented by the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

We open a large stargate with kinship of all kind when empathy for horses takes place. An understanding of these positives value and virtue adds to quality life. The wild horses nurture individuals in society by moral accountability. Nature provides us the basis for human integrity, compassion, humility, patience, trust, worthiness, kindness and courage. Losing our freedom symbol means we lose out these special qualities of life!

A moratorium on roundups would be the right thing to do and is necessary to begin to uphold the laws and freedoms not currently enforced.

The wild horse our a natural symbol to uphold in heart support and in politics. Our voice of horse advocates and animal/wildlife are much greater than its parts that would like to compromise the wild ones.

Sign Petition to Save Cloud’s Herd

We need 5,000 signatures - please share this petition with friends!
The round up of Cloud’s herd is scheduled for September 1st and 70 horses plus foals could lose their freedom and their families. Many of those removed would be horses in Cloud’s age group- even his 18 year old mother could be targeted for removal! This unnecessary removal must be stopped. Please sign this petition which will be sent to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and BLM Director Bob Abbey. Please click here to sign the petition- it only takes a moment!

    STOP THE WILD HORSE WIPE-OUT – www.wildhorsepreservation.org

America’s wild horses are being eradicated in violation of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse & Burro Act, which protects them as “living symbols” of our Nation’s spirit. From over 2 million in the 1800s, fewer than 25,000 remain on our public lands. There are now more wild horses in government holding pens than remain in the wild. Still, the round-ups continue, and a recent change in the law opens the door to thousands being sent to slaughter.

Although in-the-wild management would save millions of tax-dollars, special interests have been successful in pressuring the government to systematically remove wild horses from public lands - specifically corporate cattle interests who want our horses replaced with private cattle for subsidized grazing.

AWHPC is coordinating a letter-writing campaign: In addition to signing this petition, it is important that you please send individual letters to your federal legislators calling for a Congressional inquiry into the government’s wild horse management practices. Tell them that our national heritage does not belong on European dinner tables.

Did anyone know that part of the “stimulus package” includes a payment of $610 per horse to the persons contracted to round up mustangs off the range? How could the BLM PUT A RANCHER in charge of the program getting horses off of OUR range to make room for more cattle.
HOW COULD ANYONE BELIEVE THAT 30000 WILD HORSES & BURROS ARE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROTECTED BY LAW ARE DOING MORE DAMAGE THAN SIX MILLION CATTLE ?

I am ~ a wild horse and social worker I can speak for those who can’t speak, even muted speak for our American Wild horses ~ they are our National Treasure to ROAM in freedom as a symbol of our freedom for man/animal to conserve of our natural beauty and ethical values of altruistic love. Nature & equines are our birth right ~ including the ancient bond with the dawn horse (USA /Mustangs.)
I support views of Velma Johnson, Craig Downer and PBS and Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation, as well as Ginger Kathrens views as my views for these pristine centurions. I will continue to assist this Wild Horse and speak of Wild Horses as companions, as history and to connection to our spirits of unconditional love.
Will man break their ancient bond with history ~ time will only tell. I truly hope NOT!! Wild Horses are not (hobby horses to be tossed in a cart when we are done with their use.)
I don’t understand why we always abuse them, destroy them or ship them.
We do as humans do, a disservice to things we love to later build a statue to a beautiful memory. We cannot let the spirit of the West to be put out during our Christmas Holiday.
Maybe Wild Horses are just to be looked at and we uphold a value of trust, courage, pride we will allow an animal to set the pace for ethical values rather humans weaknesses and destruction.
If we destroy the horses we are the next large mammal in the food chain will be next? Sterilizing horses as a species is no way to keep wild horses as a species alive. It is sterilizing horses to extinction. They will be long GONE.
We are all connected in the chain of life ~ we harm wild horses ~ we harm ourselves.
    Let’s do ourselves better
Best to all and to our beloved wild horses
